A gala dinner with special guest Edgar M. Bronfman on May 30, followed by the 77th Commencement Exercises and new campus dedication ceremonies on June 2, crowned a series of celebratory events marking Hebrew College's first year at the Newton Centre campus.
Beginning in March, luminaries from the academic and literary worlds offered lectures and workshops, readings and text study for members of the College community. Dr. Lewis Glinert kicked off the Inaugural Events on March 10, with a lecture on the Baal Shem Tov to honor the opening of Hebrew College's new Hasidic Text Institute. Other guests included award-winning Israeli author Savyon Liebrecht, whose lectures and workshops drew hundreds of participants in late May. Also in May, rabbinics scholar Dr. David Weiss Halivni presented an evening of text study and discussion; and Dr. Michael Rosenak, one of the world's leading theorists on the philosophy of education, was on campus for a series of June forums.
Inaugural Events continued through October, as the community celebrated the publication of landmark books by Hebrew College faculty members: On April 14, Dr. Nehemia Polen marked the release of The Rebbe's Daughter. Dr. Solomon Schimmel read from Wounds Not Healed by Time on September 12, and Dr. Joshua Jacobson talked about Chanting the Hebrew Bible on October 21. The following day, Prozdor instructor Norman Finkelstein discussed Forged in Freedom.
Mr. Bronfman, President of the World Jewish Congress and Chair of the Board of Governors of International Hillel, met with students and was guest speaker at the May 30 New Campus Builders Gala Appreciation Dinner.
Campus dedication ceremonies at the June 2 Commencement included placing a mezuzah on the Nathan H. and Sadie Stone Friedman Building and a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Rae and Joseph Gann Library. At its first Commencement on the new campus grounds, the College awarded graduate degrees and certificates to 22 students. A recordbreaking 102 high school students graduated from the Prozdor, and 214 adults received certificates for completing Me'ah, a two-year intensive adult learning program.
