Generating community debate even before it began, a four-part February series, Specters of Amalek: Deciphering the New Antisemitism, drew more than 850 people for a public dialogue with speakers from across the ideological spectrum. Among the questions they tackled: What is the magnitude of contemporary antisemitismand what is its relationship to Israeli politics? When is criticism of Israel antisemitic? Co-sponsored by the Center for Adult Jewish Learning at Hebrew College and the Anti-Defamation League, the series featured civil liberties attorney Alan M. Dershowitz, Dartmouth professor Susannah Heschel, activist Cherie Brown and New Republic editor and Hebrew College National Board member Leon Wieseltier.
Of the spirited and often heated response to the program, Dr. Avi Bernstein-Nahar, Director of Community Education, said, "It is important to provide a forum for people to have frank disagreements about contemporary Jewish politics and to deliberate openly together. Too much is at stake not to make the effort."
