Singing election-inspired songsThe South African freedom song "We Have the Power"; "Shir Hashirim" from The Song of Songs, celebrating the crowning of King Solomon; and Irving Berlin's "God Bless America"the Zamir Chorale of Boston was center stage at a Democratic National Convention gala reception for delegates and members of the Greater Boston Jewish community on July 25.
Performing a capella because the program took place during the nine days of mourning leading up to Tisha B'Av, the chorale serenaded about 2,000 guests as they passed through security checks and entered the meeting room at the World Trade Center Boston. Later, the group sang again as a prelude to the main program, which featured speeches by Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi (Cal.), Senator Hilary Clinton (N.Y.) and Governor Bill Richardson (N.M.).
One of a whirlwind of receptions during DNC convention week in Boston, the event was cosponsored by the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, the Jewish Community Relations Council, Combined Jewish Philanthropies of Greater Boston, United Jewish Communities and the National Jewish Democratic Council. The Zamir Chorale of Boston, under the direction of Joshua Jacobson, are artists-in-residence at Hebrew College.
