How to use the Online Catalog (ALEPH)
Basic Searching
|
By Author and Title: Use the Basic Search (in English or Hebrew). Type the author's name and one or more keywords from the title into the box, ensure that the Field to search box is set at All Fields and click Go. |
|
By Author: Enter the author's last name, followed by first name. Change the Field to search box to Author. |
|
By Title: Enter the title, or the first part of it. Change the Field to search box to Title. |
|
By Subject
- Use the Basic Search and set the Field to search box to Subject; or
- Use the Browse option (in light blue on top): select Subject as the Index to browse, type your subject word into the box and click on Go. This will take you to the alphabetical list of subject headings, starting with the term you typed in. Browse through the list, looking for similar, relevant subject terms. Click on any term to go to records containing that subject term. |
Viewing Records
|
When you have a list of results, click on the underlined record number to see the full view of that record. |
|
To view more than one record, click the checkboxes for the desired records on the results list and then click on View selected (top) to see the full view of those records. |
|
In the Full View of a record you will find the Library Holdings information. You also have the option to see the record in a variety of formats: Standard, Catalog card, Citation, Name Tag or MARC tags. |
Modifying the Search
When you have the list of search results on screen, you may choose
Filter or
Refine (in wide light-blue bar, top) to modify your search.
|
Use Filter to limit your search results, for example, to records published in a certain year or to "new" records only. |
|
Use Refine to combine a new search word with your previous search. Use AND or NOT to narrow your search and use OR to broaden it. |
Building a List of Relevant Records
While searching the catalog, you can create a list of records that are of interest to you, and then email them to yourself. To do this, either click on
Add to Basket (on wide light-blue bar, top) at the full display of a record or select records on the results list (by clicking in the checkboxes) and then use the
Add to Basket option. Following either method, you can then click on
Basket in the top menu to view the complete list of those records that you have chosen. Use the
Save/Mail option to send the results to yourself for later use.
Searching in Hebrew
To search in Hebrew, choose either the
Basic Search or the
Advanced Search and change to the Hebrew keyboard by typing the Shift and Alt keys at the same time. The language box on the lower-right corner of your screen should change from En to He. If you do not have Hebrew enabled on your home keyboard, click
