In mid-August a unique North American sporting event took place in which athletes, coaches and spectators agreed to abide by a "Rachmanus Rule" that prohibited them from putting down opposing players or teams. Called the JCC Maccabi Games, the event is an annual Olympics-style competition for Jewish teens that merges sports with Jewish values.
An impressive 73 Prozdor students joined 1,700 Jewish teens from across the globe at this year's Boston-based games, where they participated in a full range of team sports, community service activities and social events. A small number reported on the action for the games' newsletter.
"To bring almost 2,000 Jewish teens from all over the world to participate in sports is a phenomenal undertaking," says Prozdor High School Director Bil Zarch. "The Games show the students that there are other ways to connect to the Jewish community than learning in the classroom."
