March–April 2004 · Volume 7, Number 4

OPENING GAMBIT

From Bobby Fisher to the Polgar sisters, Jewish chess grandmasters have played a leading role in the world of international chess competitions. In honor of that great legacy—and just for fun and an intellectual challenge—Hebrew College invites chess aficionados of all backgrounds and levels of experience to polish their games at the newly created Chess Studio on the Hill.

The group's first meeting, March 31, from 6:00–9:00 p.m., features Belarus chess master Valery Frenklakh. A graduate of the Minsk chess school, where he studied under grandmaster I. Boleslavsky, Frenklakh has coached chess students around the world for 25 years, including many Massachusetts state champions.

The brainchild of alumnus Eric Cushing P'64, BJEd'68, The Chess Studio on the Hill offers a chance to learn the game and its history, sharpen strategy, play with others and make new friends. A light kosher supper will be served.

For more information and to RSVP, contact Susan Megerman, 617-559-8774, or email smegerman@hebrewcollege.edu.
