Steven CopelandDr. Steven Copeland, associate professor of Jewish Thought and Education at Hebrew College, is noted for his innovative approaches to teaching classical Jewish texts. A frequent lecturer in various Jewish education forums, he has served as a curriculum consultant to the Boston Bureau of Jewish Education and developed curricula in many areas, including the study of Bible, prayer, Zionism and Midrash. Among the materials he has developed are a modern Jewish history education and leadership source book for National Young Judaea; "Teaching with Texts," an introduction to a series of essays on contemporary Jewish and Zionist issues for the Gesher Foundation; and "Humor and Coincidence in Purim: A Curriculum Model for Teaching the Jewish Holidays" for Hebrew University and the World Zionist Organization. Previous to his appointment at Hebrew College in 1988, he taught at Hebrew University in Jerusalem; and along with his full-time teaching at Boston's Hebrew College, he has also taught at Boston University, Clark University and Boston College. Dr. Copeland has devoted many years to working with Jewish youth of high school age through the Zionist youth movement Young Judea and served as the movement's national education director. His most recent writings include a book review-essay for the Journal of Law and Religion entitled "That Law Which Calls Us Away from Mystifying Rapture to Religious Responsibility," a reflection on the work of Emmanuel Levinas. He received his BA from Brandeis University and an EdD from Harvard University.

David M. GordisDr. David M. Gordis is president and professor of Rabbinics at Hebrew College and founding director of the National Center for Jewish Policy Studies (formerly the Susan and David Wilstein Institute of Jewish Policy Studies). He has lectured and written extensively on the subjects of Jewish life in America and Israel, Israel/Diaspora relations and Judaism in America and Israel. Prior to assuming the presidency of Hebrew College in 1993, Dr. Gordis was vice president, provost, and associate professor of Talmud at the University of Judaism in Los Angeles and lecturer of Jewish Law at UCLA. He has also served as vice president of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America; executive vice president of the American Jewish Committee; and the founding executive director of the Foundation for Conservative Judaism in Israel. Dr. Gordis holds Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts in History degrees from Columbia University and Master of Hebrew Literature and Doctor of Philosophy in Talmud degrees from the Jewish Theological Seminary of America where he was ordained.

Arthur GreenDr. Arthur Green, rector of Hebrew College's Rabbinical School and Irving Brudnick Professor of Philosophy and Religion, is recognized as one of the world's preeminent authorities on Jewish thought and spirituality. Previously, he taught at Brandeis University, the University of Pennsylvania and the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College, where he served as both dean and president from 1987 to 1993. A prolific author, his most recent books include Ehyeh: A Kabbalah for Tomorrow (Jewish Lights Publishing, 2002) and A Guide to the Zohar (Stanford University, 2003). He is an editorial committee member for several publishers and publications, including Jewish Lights Publishing, the Jewish Publication Society and the Classics of Western Spirituality series. Dr. Green received his BA and PhD from Brandeis and an MHL and rabbinic ordination from the Jewish Theological Seminary.

Judith KatesDr. Judith Kates, professor of Jewish Women's Studies at Hebrew College, is a noted expert in the field of Jewish women's studies and co-editor (with Gail Twersky Reimer) of Beginning Anew: A Woman's Companion to the High Holy Days and Reading Ruth: Contemporary Women Reclaim a Sacred Story. Prior to joining Hebrew College, she taught at Harvard University for 11 years, and in 1998, she was named an "outstanding educator" by Boston's Bureau of Jewish Education. She received her BA from Radcliffe College and her MA and PhD in comparative literature from Harvard University.

Barry MeschDr. Barry Mesch is provost and Stone/Teplow Families' Professor of Jewish Thought and lead advisor to Hebrew College's MA students. He came to Hebrew College in 1990 from the University of Florida where he was associate professor of Religion and the founder and director of the Center for Jewish Studies. Specializing in the history of Jewish philosophy and medieval biblical exegesis, Dr. Mesch received his BS from Columbia, his BRE from the Jewish Theological Seminary and his PhD from Brandeis.

Fields of Expertise: Medieval and modern Jewish thought; biblical exegesis; Jewish historiography.

Nehemia PolenDr. Nehemia Polen, professor of Jewish Thought and director of the Hasidic Text Institute at Hebrew College, is a leading expert in Hasidism and Jewish thought. His most recent book, an edited and annotated translation of Malkah Shapiro's memoir, The Rebbe's Daughter: Memoir of a Hasidic Childhood (2002), received the 2002 National Jewish Book Award, considered one of the most prestigious honors in the field of Jewish literature. In 1998–99, he was a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellow, working on the writings of Malkah Shapiro, which led to his translation and publication of her story. He is also the author of The Holy Fire: The Teachings of Rabbi Kalonymus Shapira, Rebbe of the Warsaw Ghetto (1994), as well as many academic and popular articles on Hasidism and Jewish spirituality. A frequent and popular lecturer, Dr. Polen speaks on such topics as Jewish mysticism, Hasidism, Jewish prayer, the rhythm of the Jewish calendar and the Hebrew Bible. He received a BS from Johns Hopkins, rabbinic ordination from Ner Israel Rabbinical College, an MEd from Northeastern, and a PhD from Boston University, where he studied with Elie Wiesel.

Or RoseOr Rose is Bet Midrash instructor at Hebrew College's Rabbinical School and a faculty member of the Me'ah Graduate Institute. A popular lecturer on Jewish spirituality, he is the author of two books, God in All Moments: Spiritual & Practical Wisdom from the Hasidic Masters (Jewish Lights Publishing, 2003) and Abraham Joshua Heschel: Man of Spirit, Man of Action (Jewish Publication Society, 2003). He holds a BA from Yeshiva University and is a PhD candidate at Brandeis University.

Solomon SchimmelDr. Solomon Schimmel, professor of Jewish education and psychology, is the author of Wounds Not Healed by Time: The Power of Repentance and Forgiveness and The Seven Deadly Sins: Jewish, Christian and Classical Reflections on Human Psychology (both published by Oxford University Press), and numerous articles and book chapters on Jewish thought, psychology of religion and Jewish education. Dr. Schimmel received his BA from the City College of New York and MA and PhD from Wayne State University, and has been a National Science Foundation Research Fellow at Harvard University and a visiting professor and/or research fellow at Brandeis University, University of Texas, Bar-Ilan University and Hebrew University.

Harvey ShapiroDr. Harvey Shapiro is dean of the Shoolman Graduate School of Jewish Education, associate professor of Education, and founder of the new Center for Jewish Day School Education at Hebrew College. He has published on a variety of subjects related to Jewish education, including the role of Israel in Jewish education, the criteria for assessing what constitutes an educated Jew, and Jewish day school education. A former principal of two Jewish day schools, Stephen S. Wise Day School in Los Angeles and Cohen Hillel Academy in Marblehead, Mass., he is presently working closely with the Solomon Schechter Day School of Greater Boston and the Rashi School in Boston to promote the professional growth of their teachers. He holds a BA from the University of Minnesota, an MS from the University of Southern California, and an MA and a PhD in Jewish Education from Hebrew Union College–Jewish Institute of Religion.

Scott M. SokolDr. Scott M. Sokol is dean of the Jewish Music Institute and director of both the Cantor-Educator program and the Special Education program at Hebrew College. He is also associate professor of Jewish music and psychology. The cantor of Temple Beth Sholom in Framingham, he is editor of the Journal of Synagogue Music. Prior to joining Hebrew College, Dr. Sokol was a practicing neurophysiologist and professor at Harvard Medical School. He holds a BA from Brandeis University, an MA and PhD from Johns Hopkins University and an MSM, Diploma of Hazzan and Cantorial Investiture from the Jewish Theological Seminary.

David B. StarrDr. David B. Starr, assistant professor of Jewish history and dean of Me'ah at Hebrew College, is an expert on the subjects of modern Jewish history, Jewish education and adult Jewish learning in America. The Me'ah adult learning program has grown significantly under Dr. Starr's leadership, and his writings set forth Me'ah as a model of Jewish education for lay and professional leadership nationwide. He is also a leading scholar on the life and work of Solomon Schechter (the founder of the Conservative Movement) and has published numerous papers and articles on Schechter. A popular lecturer for six years in the Hornstein Program for Jewish Communal Service at Brandeis University, Dr. Starr also instructed members of the Jewish Labor Committee for seven years. He was a rabbinic advisor to the Student Conservative Minyan at Harvard Radcliffe Hillel from 1994 to 1999. Prior to joining the Hebrew College faculty in 1994, he was associate rabbi at Temple Israel of Great Neck, N.Y. He received a B.A. from the University of Minnesota; an M.A. and Ph.D. from Columbia University; and an M.A. and rabbinical ordination from the Jewish Theological Seminary.
