February 5, 2003Arthur Green, recognized as one of the world's preeminent authorities on Jewish spirituality and Jewish thought, has been named Dean of Hebrew College's new transdenominational rabbinical school, which begins its pilot program this fall.
"Arthur Green's joining the faculty is a momentous event for Hebrew College," said President David Gordis. "His appointment represents a significant and promising moment in the life of the American Jewish community. We welcome him with enormous pleasure."
The College's new rabbinical school will enable students to clarify their own religious positions within a pluralistic, diverse academic community. Designed to blend personal religious commitment, scholarship and professional skill development, the program has been under consideration by the College for three years and in an intensive planning phase for the past eight months. The pilot program will open with 8 to 10 students. But even before formal applications are being accepted, more than three times that number have already expressed interest.
Green, who will also hold the title of Visiting Professor of Jewish Mysticism at Hebrew College, is the Philip W. Lown Professor of Jewish Thought at Brandeis University. He will divide his time between his new position at Hebrew College and his faculty commitments at Brandeis.
Educated at Brandeis and the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, Green previously taught at the University of Pennsylvania and the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College, where he served as both dean and president from 1987 to 1993.
A prolific author, Green has written several books, including
Tormented Master: A Life of Rabbi Nahman of Bratslav, Seek My Face, Speak My Name: A Contemporary Jewish Theology and
These are the Words: A Vocabulary of Jewish Spiritual Life. His most recent publication is
Ehyeh: A Kabbalah for Tomorrow.
"It is with great excitement that I turn my attention once again to rabbinic education," said Green. "No task is more vital to ensuring the creative future of Jewish life. The dynamism and creative curricular approach of this program will soon set the standard for new ways of thinking about the American rabbinate."
Founded in 1921, Hebrew College maintains a historic commitment to Jewish learning and scholarship within a pluralistic, nonsectarian academic environment. Hebrew College is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges.
