Admissions Requirements
Hebrew College offers three certificate programs, in collaboration with NETA, for
teachers of the NETA curriculum. The certificates are designed to help teachers advance
in their careers as they gain experience with the NETA program.
As a certificate program student, you will gain knowledge and training to teach Hebrew
as a second language in middle and high school, learn about theoretical linguistics
and pedagogic methodologies of teaching Hebrew as a second language to teenagers,
and gain experience through supervised fieldwork at a NETA school.
Certificate in Hebrew Language Teaching—21 Credits
Designed for individuals interested in making a career of teaching Hebrew language,
this certificate is suitable for individuals who are working in schools using the
NETA curriculum, but open to other qualified students. You will gain experienced
through supervised fieldwork at a NETA school.

- Concepts of second language acquisition
- Linguistics, history and literature of the Hebrew language
- Linguistic progression
- Developing proficiency in the four language skills: speaking, listening, reading
and writing
- Components of a second language curriculum
- Pedagogical and didactic skills for teaching Hebrew as a second language
- Methods of evaluation
- Teaching Jewish and Israeli literary texts
- Teaching beginners
- Special needs and learning differences
Program Schedule
The certificate takes 3 years to complete. All coursework takes place during intensive
summer institutes at Hebrew College.
- Part I: Intensive 25-day course during first summer year
- Part II: 40-hour, supervised Hebrew teaching practicum during school year
- Part III: Intensive 10-day course during third summer

Teaching Hebrew as a Second Language I: Theory and Practice (150 classroom hours)—10
credits
Supervised Fieldwork in Teaching Hebrew as a Second Language—6 credits
Teaching Hebrew as a Second Language II: Theory and Practice (80 classroom hours)—5
credits
Certificate in Hebrew Language Teaching and Mentoring—21 Credits
This certificate program is intended for career-oriented Hebrew language teachers
who have been teaching the NETA curriculum for at least one year and are the coordinators
of Hebrew teaching at their schools. You must have a profound commitment to deepening
your knowledge and enhancing your teaching and peer-mentoring abilities.

The certificate takes 3 years to complete. All coursework takes place during intensive
summer institutes at Hebrew College.
- Part I: Intensive 10-day course during first summer; 40-hour, supervised Hebrew teaching
practicum during school year
- Part II: Intensive 10-day course during second summer; 40-hour, supervised Hebrew
teaching practicum during school year
- Part III: Intensive 10-day course during third summer
Course of Study
- Teaching and Mentoring I: Morphology and Syntax of the Hebrew Language: Theory and
Practice (80 classroom hours)—5 credits
- Teaching and Mentoring II: History and Semantics of the Hebrew Language: Theory and
Practice (80 classroom hours)—5 credits
- Teaching and Mentoring III: Hebrew Literature (80 classroom hours)—5 credits
- Fieldwork in Teaching Hebrew for Coordinators (Supervised fieldwork in a NETA school,
40 hours over the course of two school years)—6 credits
Certificate in Hebrew Teaching for Master Teachers—21 Credits
Intended for veteran, career Hebrew language teachers with a profound commitment
to deepening their knowledge and enhancing their teaching abilities, this certificate
is suitable for individuals who have been using the NETA curriculum for at least
one year.
Program Schedule
The certificate takes 3 years to complete. All coursework takes place during intensive
summer institutes at Hebrew College.
- Part I: Intensive 10-day course during first summer; 40-hour, supervised Hebrew teaching
practicum during school year
- Part II: Intensive 10-day course during second summer; 40-hour, supervised Hebrew
teaching practicum during school year
- Part III: Intensive 10-day course during third summer
Course of Study
Core classes are taken alongside candidates for the Certificate in Hebrew Language
Teaching and Mentoring. Afternoon sections are designed specifically for master teachers.
- Teaching for Master Teachers I: Morphology and Syntax of the Hebrew Language—Theory
and Practice for Master Teachers (80 classroom hours)—5 credits
- Teaching for Master Teachers II: History and Semantics of the Hebrew Language—Theory
and Practice for Master Teachers (80 classroom hours)—5 credits
- Teaching for Master Teachers III: Hebrew Literature (80 classroom hours)—5 credits
- Fieldwork in Teaching Hebrew for Master Teachers (Supervised fieldwork in a NETA
school, 40 hours over the course of two school years)—6 credits
NETA Certificate Admissions Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university and a competitive grade-point
average
- Official GRE scores
- TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) scores for all foreign students whose
first language is not English and who have not received a degree from an academic
institution where the language of study was English.
- Two letters of recommendation, preferably from supervisors
