Master of Arts in Jewish Studies

Hebrew College's new Master’s Degree in Jewish Studies, with a choice of specializations, focuses our spiritual and intellectual legacy upon contemporary challenges and emerging expressions of Jewish life, values, ethics and wisdom —providing the next generation of leadership for change in the institutions of Jewish life and living for the twenty-first century.

The programs employ a critical appreciation of and an application to practice in personal formation, community organization and professional growth. The programs are designed to introduce and highlight a pluralist framework for textual learning and its implications for engaging a complex and changing world. This will be a study of Judaism that welcomes a focus inward towards motivating insights and a focus outward towards activism and social change while remaining sensitive to the divergent and sometimes discontinuous paths of contemporary Jewish life.

Course of Study

As an academic degree designed for working professionals, candidates typically take the degree part-time over four semesters. As a low residency program, coursework is offered online asynchronously using our award winning Schoology platform. There is one required summer residency at Hebrew College in Boston of six days, with the option of an enriching and soulful Shabbat experience.

  • Specializations: The degree is available with two optional specializations: Social and Environmental Change Leadership and Jewish Spirituality and Mysticism.
  • Electives: Following foundational requirements, candidates are invited to take electives in either track or to specialize in one in addition to the overall degree. Core approaches to the degree include textual wisdom, hevruta-based pedagogy and community organizing and leadership.
  • Dual Degree Option: For those interested in Jewish Education, we also offer a dual degree in Jewish Education and Jewish Studies.  For those interested in our areas of specialization, but not in a full Master's, we offer Certificates in both areas of specialization.
