Course Readings: Purchasing Books and Other Reading Materials

HCO tries to make reading lists available to students as early as possible, usually about two weeks before the semester starts. At appropriate times, links to readings for upcoming courses will be emailed to students who register, or linked from this page here.

Whenever possible, instructors will create coursepacks with photocopies of articles and book excerpts. Students are usually charged for coursepacks to cover copyright and mailing costs.

Book Shopping

We suggest that you check out online booksellers when books are not available via your library or local bookstore. If you are having trouble finding a book for sale, don't forget to check the publisher's Web site: the publisher itself may sell the book online. Here are a few well-known and less well-known sources for new and used books. If you find additional online resources, please be sure to let us know!

There are many ways to access the texts you need, and you will find that price comparisons between a few sources often pay off. In addition, used copies of these books are frequently available. Used copies can be located through Amazon, but may also be found on Web sites dedicated to used books (e.g. ABEbooks, Powell's, etc.). A selection of online booksellers is listed in the sidebar.
