Creating Hebrew Homework Digitally Using a Graphics Tablet

These instructions are specific to Corel Painter Essentials, software that comes with your Wacom tablet. However, similar options will be available in many art programs, so you should be able to follow these instructions to create similar files and settings in other programs.

Creating a New Page

Choose File > New or click Control (Mac: Option) + N.

Choose a width of about 500 pixels and a height of about 600 pixels. The resolution should never be higher than 72—higher resolutions are for printing purposes and only cause the image to be too big to display on a typical computer screen. (They also cause the file sizes to be too big.)

If you are editing any created or scanned image, find the ability to modify these settings as explained above. You should find the Resolution in a menu option named Modify > Image Size, or something to that effect, depending on the verbiage your program uses.

The illustration below shows a setting about as big as you would want to make your image. You might find it easier to work with an image that is a hundred or so pixels smaller in both width and height.

When you click OK, your new file displays. It may not be at 100% zoom—in the example below, you’ll notice, the window tells you the image is displaying at 67%.

Adjusting the Zoom

It’s best to view the image real size, since otherwise the letters you make will be too large—remember, this is a graphics program, so you might as well be sketching a horse as far as it knows! You need to make your own adjustments for your homework to look right.

To bring the zoom up to 100%, click Control and the plus key or open the Windows menu and choose Zoom In or Zoom Out. If you are a beginner and it helps to write big, you might even want to view the image slightly enlarged so that when viewed normally your handwriting appears slightly smaller.

Writing

Now, you need to get a line. To get a line rather than some other effect, adjust the instrument you are using. This information is in the top right corner of the screen. Choose a pencil rather than a brush. The default pencil setting should give you a good line.

Now you can begin to write!

Saving the Page

When you are finished with that page, choose the menu File > Save As and pick JPEG (the instructor can’t correct GIF files). The default settings are fine, so when you see them, click OK. Here is how the default settings should look.

These settings compress the file so it will not be too big to e-mail.
This saved file is one page of your homework. To start a new page, open a new file.

Naming the File

You will submit your homework as attachments to the Hebrew instructor. So that she can easily read the files, please include your initials, the date (month and day in digits), and the page number in the file. For example, my homework from October 6 might be named:
