Editing images for the Student Home Page

You should be able to open the file in any art program and try any of the following (the specific menus and terms may be different, e.g., edit vs. modify, but this should convey the general idea so you can find these options):

Save your edited file with a different file name than the original so you do not lose that original!

1. Your image file should be .jpeg, jpg, or .gif format. If it is not, you may be able to open it in any software you have for editing images and Save As one of those formats, probably .jpg will work best for your photo.

2. Make sure the resolution of your photo is 72 pixels per inch, because computer screens display everything at that resolution. Photos made for printing often have much higher resolution, which is why they look so big when you open them on your computer.

Modify > Image Size will enable you to change the resolution to 72 pixels per inch, making the picture smaller. By default it should preserve the ratio so if you change the length of the height or width it will adjust the other side proportionately

3. Resize the photo as you like to fit into your Web page layout.

Transform > Scale -- will give you a resizing tool to drag or a box to adjust the numbers.

Modify > Canvas Size will crop (rather than resize) the image to your measurements.

There should also be a tool bar with a cropping tool that you can select. After selecting the cropping tool, click and drag to draw a square (dashed lines) around the area you want to preserve. Let go the mouse to review the selected square, and drag the corners to adjust. Press the Enter key to crop everything outside your selected area.

4. Make sure picture is correct-side-up.

Depending on the software, you may need to look for an “Image > Transform or Modify > Image” or “Modify > Transform” option. The language varies slightly, but the ability to rotate the image is in just about every basic image editor, even the ones that come as default from Windows or Mac. Please rotate the image so it is right-side up and save it before using it.
