QuickTime Player

Audio files and some other content in your courses are conveyed using the QuickTime player. This software should already be installed on your computer and should load automatically whenever you need it. Here are some hints for more robust use of the player.

  1. As the movie loads, the gray status bar expands to let you know how much has been downloaded.

    Above: about one-third downloaded.

Below: three-quarters downloaded.

  1. Press play.

You can start playing the movie before it has all downloaded. If you are connecting via broadband, you should be able to press play almost immediately and the movie will play straight through.
The play button is on the left end of the bar:
Play Button in bottom left

It’s the triangular button in the middle: Play Button

To pause the movie, press it again.
To start playing from any point—ahead of or behind where you are—you can click on the round ball indicating where in the timeline the playback is, and drag it anywhere on the timeline to start play from that point.

  1. If the movie stops playing partway through, check to see if the download is complete. The movie will pause if you come to the end of the part that’s already downloaded; press play again when the movie has finished downloading (see below).
    Full Downloaded Play Bar
In the image above, you can tell the movie has downloaded because the play bar has filled in completely with gray. (Compare to the two images at the top of this page.)

  2. To the right of the status bar are two buttons that let you rewind or fast-forward the movie: Jump Buttons

The third button lets you adjust your settings for QuickTime, including the connection speed.
